I don’t have much to add to this post, other than to suggest to go read it. It’s a good rundown of some things in Pandaria that should not be there.
I do want to echo a point Apple Cider Mage hints at toward the end. By now there is no doubt to me that this is not a mistake on Blizzard’s part. The Ji Firepaw incident of a while back gave Blizzard notice that a significant part of the community hates this sort of thing and wants no part of it. Yet there are many things that still remain.
Look, Blizzard did not put Corpsegrinder up on stage ignorant of his homophobic remarks and then was surprised at both them and the uproar about it. They did not put Ji Firepaw out there as a sleaze and then temper him out of surprise. Garrosh did not accidentally call Sylvanas a bitch. Similarly, they did not create a daily in which the player character is raped with ignorance as to how a player who has actually been raped might react to it.
They did these things deliberately. There are just too many of them, too often, with initial inconsequential apologies put forth as to them being presented in the name of “fun”. (I will predict right now: if the The Secrets of Guo-Lai quest thing gains legs, someone at Blizzard will change the quest text and say “If this offended you, we apologize” and say it was meant in good fun.) Blizzard is doing this to cater to a hopefully small segment of players who feels empowered by that sort of thing as an expression of their own diminishing male privilege. The time to cut them some slack is gone.
